Unveiling Our Demonstration & Validation Sites Across Europe

WATERGRID is not just a concept. It’s a living experiment unfolding across eight diverse locations, each grappling with unique water challenges. Today, we are proud to introduce the heart of our project: the Demonstration & Validation Sites. These critical “laboratories” are where the innovative Smart Water Grid (SWG) concept – combining Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) with smart technologies – will be co-developed, tested, and evaluated for climate-resilient water management.

A Pan-European Approach to Water Resilience

The selection of these eight sites is strategic, ensuring a comprehensive validation of the SWG concept across Europe’s varied hydrological, climatic, and socio-economic contexts. As illustrated in the infographic below, our sites span four distinct biogeographical areas: Atlantic, Continental, Mountain, and Mediterranean. This diversity allows us to:

💧 Slow, Move, and Store Water More Effectively: Implementing solutions that optimize water flow and storage.

🌿 Reduce Pollution and Nutrient Pressures: Leveraging natural processes for improved water quality.

☀️ Enhance Drought Resilience: Building systems that withstand prolonged dry periods.

🐠 Support Healthy Ecosystems and Sustainable Water Use: Fostering biodiversity and responsible resource management.

📊 Provide Real-World Evidence for the SWG Concept: Generating robust data to prove the effectiveness and scalability of our approach.

What Makes Each Site Unique?

From managing water levels in Germany’s Lake Schwerin catchment to addressing flash floods in Spain’s Guadalquivir River, each site presents specific challenges. These range from agricultural water scarcity and urban flooding to biodiversity loss and the need for enhanced aquifer recharge. Over the coming months, we will dedicate individual articles to each site, diving into:
• Local Challenges: The specific water management issues faced.
• Nature-Based Solutions (NBS): The tailored natural interventions being implemented.
• Smart Technologies: How digital tools are integrating with NBS.
• Expected Impacts: The anticipated benefits for local communities, ecosystems, and economic sustainability.

Join Us on the Journey!

The end of the year marks a period of reflection and anticipation. As we prepare to unveil each site in depth in early 2026, we extend our warmest wishes for happy holidays and a restful break to all our partners, stakeholders, and supporters. We are excited to share the detailed progress from our European “laboratory” in the new year.

Stay tuned as we travel across Europe, exploring WATERGRID’s innovative demonstration landscape!
